What is AVIF and why do you need to convert it?
Last updated: April 2026
AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern image format developed by the Alliance for Open Media. It uses the AV1 video codec to compress still images, and the results are impressive — AVIF files are typically 50% smaller than equivalent JPEGs and around 20% smaller than WEBP at the same perceived quality. It also supports HDR, wide color gamut, and alpha transparency, which makes it technically superior to most formats in day-to-day use.
The catch is compatibility. While Chrome, Firefox, and Safari all support AVIF now, many apps, email clients, older Android versions, and editing tools still can't open the format. If you've received an AVIF from a modern phone export, a Next.js image pipeline, or a Cloudinary/Imgix delivery URL and need to share it more broadly, converting to JPG or WEBP is the practical move.
You can drop up to 20 AVIF files here, pick a target format per file or apply one format to the whole batch, then download everything individually or as a ZIP. Conversions run on our server so you get consistent results regardless of which browser or device you're on.

AVIF converter FAQs
What format should I convert AVIF to?
It depends on what you're doing with the file. JPG is the safest pick for maximum compatibility — email, social media, and older apps all handle it without issue. WEBP gives you smaller files than JPG and works well on the modern web, though a handful of older tools still don't support it. PNG is the right call if your AVIF has transparency that you need to preserve — JPG and lossy WEBP will both drop the alpha channel.
Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?
Some quality is lost because JPEG is a lossy format. In practice, at the default quality setting (90/100) the difference is not visible to the naked eye on typical screens. What you will notice is the file getting larger — AVIF's compression is so efficient that a JPG of the same image at the same visual quality will almost always be bigger. If file size matters, WEBP is a closer match to AVIF's efficiency while still being widely supported.
Why can't I open my AVIF file in Photoshop or Windows?
Windows Photos and File Explorer support AVIF from Windows 11 onward, but older Windows 10 builds need the AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store. Photoshop added native AVIF support in version 23.2 (early 2022), so older versions will throw an error. Lightroom Classic still has limited support. Converting to JPG or PNG sidesteps all of that instantly.
Can I convert multiple AVIF files at once?
Yes — upload up to 20 AVIF files in one go. Use the bulk format selector to apply the same output format to every file, or set them individually if you need different outputs per image. Once all conversions finish, download files one by one or grab the whole batch as a ZIP.
